Lore & Background
Bloomberg grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, and graduated from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School. He began his career at Salomon Brothers, where he became a general partner before being fired in 1981. Using the $10 million he received from his equity, he founded Innovative Market Systems, later renamed Bloomberg L.P., which launched the Bloomberg Terminal in 1982. He served as CEO from 1981 to 2001 and again from 2014 to 2023.
Bloomberg was elected mayor of New York City in 2001 as a Republican, after switching from the Democratic Party. He served three consecutive terms, pursuing socially liberal and fiscally moderate policies with a technocratic style. His tenure included establishing public charter schools, rebuilding infrastructure, supporting gun control, and leading a re-zoning of large areas after the September 11 attacks. He faced significant criticism for the city's stop-and-frisk program, which he later apologized for.
In 2018, Bloomberg rejoined the Democratic Party and launched a campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination in November 2019. He self-funded $935 million, setting a record for the most expensive primary campaign, and ended his campaign in March 2020 after winning 61 delegates. In 2024, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden.
Reader's Guide
Michael Bloomberg's significance lies in his dual impact as a business innovator and urban leader. As founder of Bloomberg L.P., he revolutionized financial data delivery through the Bloomberg Terminal, building a company with revenues of approximately $10 billion in 2018 and over 325,000 terminal subscribers worldwide. His mayoralty reshaped New York City through large-scale rezoning, public charter schools, and public health initiatives, while also drawing criticism for the stop-and-frisk program. Bloomberg's philanthropic giving, totaling $24.5 billion as of 2025, and his signing of the Giving Pledge underscore his commitment to charitable causes. His 2020 presidential campaign, though unsuccessful, demonstrated the potential for self-funded political campaigns at an unprecedented scale. Bloomberg's legacy is complex, marked by both transformative achievements and controversies, and he remains a centibillionaire with substantial influence in business, politics, and philanthropy.
