Parton was born in a one-room cabin in Pittman Center, Tennessee, the fourth of twelve children. Her father worked as a sharecropper and later tended a small tobacco farm, while her mother cared for the family and shared Smoky Mountain folklore and ballads. She began performing in church at age six, started playing a homemade guitar at seven, and by ten was appearing on local radio and television. After graduating high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville the next day.
