Charles Sanders Peirce (September 10, 1839 – April 19, 1914) was an American scientist, mathematician, logician, and philosopher sometimes known as 'the father of pragmatism.' He made major contributions to logic, including theories of relations and quantification, and defined the concept of abductive reasoning. Peirce also founded the study of semiotics and foreshadowed debates among logical positivists and proponents of philosophy of language.

Peirce was born at 3 Phillips Place in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of Sarah Hunt Mills and Benjamin Peirce, a Harvard professor of mathematics and astronomy. At age 12, he read Richard Whately's Elements of Logic, beginning his lifelong fascination with logic. He suffered from facial neuralgia (trigeminal neuralgia) from his late teens, which may have led to social isolation later in life. He earned a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts (1862), and a Bachelor of Science summa cum laude in chemistry (1863) from Harvard. At Harvard, he formed lifelong friendships with Francis Ellingwood Abbot, Chauncey Wright, and William James. Between 1859 and 1891, Peirce worked for the United States Coast Survey (later the Coast and Geodetic Survey), mainly in geodesy and gravimetry, which exempted him from the American Civil War. He was elected a resident fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in January 1867 and a member of the National Academy of Sciences on April 20, 1877. From 1869 to 1872, he worked as an assistant at Harvard's astronomical observatory. In 1872, he founded the Metaphysical Club, whose discussions birthed his notion of pragmatism. In 1879, he was appointed lecturer in logic at Johns Hopkins University, his only academic appointment. He resigned from the Coast Survey in 1891 at Superintendent Thomas Corwin Mendenhall's request.

Peirce defined abductive reasoning and rigorously formulated mathematical induction and deductive reasoning. He was one of the founders of statistics and, as early as 1886, saw that logical operations could be carried out by electrical switching circuits, an idea later used for digital computers. He founded the study of semiotics, viewing logic as its formal branch, and his tripartite theory of predication foreshadowed 20th-century debates in philosophy of language. In metaphysics, he was an objective idealist and a scholastic realist, holding to ideas of continuity (synechism) and chance (tychism) as real features of the universe, along with epistemic fallibilism and anti-skepticism. His work on the Earth ellipsoid in 1901 produced parameter values remarkably close to reality. Despite his intellectual achievements, his career was hampered by personal difficulties and opposition from figures such as Simon Newcomb.
