Theoretical physicist who developed relativity and E=mc²

Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a theoretical physicist born in Germany. He is most famous for creating the theory of relativity. His work also significantly advanced quantum theory. The equation E = mc², which came out of his special relativity, is often called the most famous equation in the world. In 1921, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics, cited for his theoretical work and especially for explaining the photoelectric effect.

Einstein was born a subject of the Kingdom of Württemberg, within the German Empire. He moved to Switzerland in 1895 and gave up his German citizenship the following year. At seventeen, in 1896, he began a teaching diploma program in math and physics at the Swiss federal polytechnic school in Zurich, finishing in 1900. He became a Swiss citizen in 1901 and kept that status for life. He then got a steady job at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern. In 1905, he earned his PhD from the University of Zurich. He relocated to Berlin in 1914 to join the Prussian Academy of Sciences and Humboldt University, and in 1917 he became director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics. This also made him a Prussian and German citizen again. In 1933, while he was visiting the United States, Adolf Hitler took power in Germany. Disturbed by the Nazis’ persecution of fellow Jews, Einstein chose to stay in the US, becoming an American citizen in 1940. Just before World War II, he signed a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt warning about a possible German nuclear weapons program and urging the US to start its own research, which became the Manhattan Project.

The year 1905 is often called his annus mirabilis, or miracle year. That year, he published four groundbreaking papers. One outlined the theory of the photoelectric effect, another explained Brownian motion, a third introduced special relativity, and a fourth showed that if special relativity is correct, mass and energy are equivalent. In 1915, he proposed general relativity, which expanded his mechanics to include gravity. A 1916 paper applied general relativity to model the universe’s structure and evolution, introducing the cosmological constant and marking the start of modern theoretical cosmology. In 1917, he wrote a paper that introduced the ideas of spontaneous and stimulated emission—the latter being the key principle behind lasers and masers—and provided insights that later helped develop quantum electrodynamics and quantum optics.

During the middle of his career, Einstein made key contributions to statistical mechanics and quantum theory. His work on the quantum physics of radiation was especially notable, proposing that light consists of particles later called photons. With physicist Satyendra Nath Bose, he developed the foundation for Bose–Einstein statistics. In his later academic years, he pursued two major efforts that ultimately failed. First, he argued against quantum theory’s introduction of fundamental randomness, famously saying that “God does not play dice.” Second, he tried to create a unified field theory by extending his geometric theory of gravitation to include electromagnetism. These pursuits left him increasingly isolated from mainstream physics. Many things bear his name, including the element Einsteinium. In 1999, Time magazine named him Person of the Century.

His parents, secular Ashkenazi Jews, were Hermann Einstein, a salesman and engineer, and Pauline Koch. In 1880, the family moved to Munich’s Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district, where his father and uncle Jakob founded Elektrotechnische Fabrik J. Einstein & Cie, a company making electrical equipment powered by direct current.

As a very young child, his parents worried he might have a learning disability because he was slow to start talking. When he was five and sick in bed, his father gave him a compass. This sparked a lifelong fascination with electromagnetism. He later said he realized that “Something deeply hidden had to be behind things.”

He began school at St. Peter’s Catholic elementary school in Munich at age five. At eight, he transferred to the Luitpold Gymnasium for advanced primary and secondary education.

In 1894, his father and uncle’s company tried to win a contract to install electric lighting in Munich but failed—they lacked the capital to upgrade from direct current to the more efficient alternating current.
