Alessandro Volta

Pioneer of electricity and inventor of the electric battery

Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (18 February 1745 – 5 March 1827) was an Italian chemist and physicist who was a pioneer of electricity and power, and is credited as the inventor of the electric battery and the discoverer of methane. Born in Como, Italy, to a noble father and a mother from the Inzaghi family, Volta began his career as a physics professor at the Royal School in Como in 1774. The following year, he significantly improved and widely promoted the electrophorus, a static electricity device, though a similar machine had been described earlier by a Swedish experimenter. In the late 1770s, he studied the chemistry of gases, discovering methane in the marshes of Lake Maggiore and later isolating it, after being inspired by a paper from Benjamin Franklin. He also conducted experiments igniting methane with an electric spark. Volta developed methods to study electrical potential and charge, establishing that they are proportional for a given object—a relationship now known as Volta’s Law of Capacitance, which led to the unit of electric potential being named the volt. In 1779, he became a professor of experimental physics at the University of Pavia, a position he held for nearly four decades. His lectures drew such large crowds that Emperor Joseph II ordered a new lecture hall built, and Volta was granted funds to acquire scientific instruments from England and France, many of which are preserved at the university’s museum. Volta’s most famous work arose from a disagreement with Luigi Galvani over “animal electricity.” Volta correctly argued that the electric current came from the contact of two different metals, not from the frog’s leg, which served only as a conductor and detector. He replaced the frog leg with brine-soaked paper and used other detection methods, thereby discovering the electrochemical series and the principle that the electromotive force of a cell equals the difference between its two electrode potentials. In 1800, he invented the voltaic pile, an early battery producing a steady current, using zinc and copper electrodes separated by cardboard soaked in brine.
