Andrei Sakharov

Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was a Soviet physicist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, awarded in 1975 for his advocacy of human rights worldwide. After the war, he researched cosmic rays before joining the Soviet atomic bomb project in 1948. Moving to Sarov in 1950, he played a key role in developing the first megaton-range Soviet hydrogen bomb, using a design known as Sakharov’s Third Idea, which employed radiation implosion—using soft X-rays from a fission bomb to compress fusion fuel symmetrically.
