Guglielmo Marconi
Creator of practical wireless telegraphy
Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi, later the 1st Marquess of Marconi, was born on 25 April 1874 in Bologna, Italy. His father, Giuseppe, was a landowner from the Bolognese Apennines, and his mother, Annie Jameson, was the granddaughter of the founder of Jameson Irish Whiskey. Giuseppe had been widowed with a son, Luigi, before marrying Annie in 1864. Marconi had an older brother, Alfonso. From ages two to six, he lived with Alfonso and their mother in Bedford, England, and his Irish heritage helped explain his later involvement in Great Britain and Ireland. When Marconi was three, his father obtained British citizenship, meaning Marconi could have also claimed it at any time.
Marconi had no formal schooling as a child. Instead, he studied chemistry, mathematics, and physics at home with private tutors, and his family hired additional tutors during winters in Tuscany or Florence. A key mentor was Vincenzo Rosa, a high school physics teacher in Livorno, who taught the 17-year-old the basics of physical phenomena and new theories on electricity. At 18, Marconi returned to Bologna and met Augusto Righi, a physics professor at the University of Bologna who had researched Heinrich Hertz’s work. Righi let Marconi attend lectures and use the university’s lab and library.
From a young age, Marconi was fascinated by science and electricity. In the early 1890s, he started working on “wireless telegraphy”—sending telegraph messages without wires. This idea wasn’t new; many had tried for over 50 years using electric conduction, induction, or light signals, but none had succeeded commercially. A breakthrough came from Heinrich Hertz, who in 1888 showed how to produce and detect electromagnetic radiation (then called “Hertzian waves,” now radio waves). Physicists were interested in the phenomenon itself, not its communication potential, believing radio waves traveled only in a straight line like light. After Hertz died in 1894, published reviews of his work—including a demonstration by Oliver Lodge and an article by Augusto Righi—renewed Marconi’s interest in building a wireless telegraphy system using radio waves, something he noticed other inventors weren’t pursuing.
At age 20, Marconi began experimenting with radio waves, building much of his own equipment in the attic of the family villa in Pontecchio (now Sasso Marconi, Italy), helped by his butler, Mignani. The attic had been a silkworm room, later called the “silkworm room.” He built on Hertz’s experiments and, following Righi’s suggestion, used a coherer—an early detector based on Édouard Branly’s 1890 findings and used in Lodge’s experiments—that changed resistance when exposed to radio waves. In summer 1894, he made a storm alarm with a battery, coherer, and electric bell that rang when it detected radio waves from lightning. One night in December 1894, he showed his mother a transmitter and receiver that made a bell ring across the room when he pressed a telegraph button. With his father’s support, he continued reading and developing ideas from physicists, creating portable transmitters and receivers that worked over longer distances, turning a lab experiment into a practical communication system.
As an entrepreneur, Marconi founded The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company (later the Marconi Company) in the United Kingdom in 1897. In 1909, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Ferdinand Braun for their contributions to wireless telegraphy. In 1929, King Victor Emmanuel III made him a marquess, the 1st Marchese di Marconi. In 1931, he set up Vatican Radio for Pope Pius XI. He died on 20 July 1937.
