Robert Koch

Heinrich Hermann Robert Koch (11 December 1843 – 27 May 1910) was a German doctor and microbiologist who received the 1905 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on tuberculosis. He is credited with identifying the specific microbes that cause deadly diseases such as tuberculosis, cholera, and anthrax, making him a key figure in the founding of modern bacteriology. Alongside Louis Pasteur, he is often called the father of microbiology, and specifically the father of medical bacteriology. His 1876 isolation of the anthrax bacterium (Bacillus anthracis) is seen as the starting point of modern bacteriology. By proving that germs could be linked to particular diseases, Koch provided direct evidence for the germ theory of disease, which laid the scientific groundwork for public health and saved countless lives. His overall contributions place him among the founders of modern medicine.
While working as a private doctor, Koch pioneered several techniques in microbiology. He was the first to use oil immersion lenses, condensers, and microphotography in microscopy. He also invented a method for growing bacteria in the lab using agar and glass plates—a technique later refined into the Petri dish by his assistant Julius Richard Petri. In recognition of his work, he was appointed government advisor at the Imperial Health Office in 1880, promoted to a senior executive position in 1882, became Director of the Hygienic Institute and Professor of Hygiene at Berlin University in 1885, and headed the Royal Prussian Institute for Infectious Diseases (later renamed the Robert Koch Institute) in 1891.
Koch’s methods led to the formulation of Koch’s postulates—four medical principles for establishing whether a specific pathogen causes a given disease. These principles are still widely used and influenced later epidemiological concepts like the Bradford Hill criteria. A major controversy arose when Koch introduced tuberculin as a treatment for tuberculosis; it proved ineffective, but after his death it was adapted for diagnostic use. The date he announced the discovery of the tuberculosis bacterium, 24 March 1882, has been observed annually as World Tuberculosis Day by the World Health Organization since 1982.
Koch was born in Clausthal, Germany, on 11 December 1843, to Hermann Koch, a mining engineer, and Mathilde Julie Henriette Biewend. He was the third of thirteen children. He taught himself to read and write before starting school in 1848 and excelled in science and math, completing secondary education in 1862. At age 19, he entered the University of Göttingen to study natural science, taking courses in mathematics, physics, and botany, and worked as an assistant in the university’s Pathological Museum. After three semesters, he switched to medicine, aspiring to become a physician. In his fifth semester, anatomist Jacob Henle—who had published a theory of contagion in 1840—invited him to join a research project on uterine nerve structure. This work earned him a university research prize and allowed him to briefly study under Rudolf Virchow, then considered Germany’s most renowned physician. During his sixth semester, Koch researched the secretion of succinic acid at the Physiological Institute, which later formed the basis of his dissertation. He graduated from medical school in January 1866 with the highest honors, maxima cum laude.
After graduating, Koch briefly worked as an assistant at the General Hospital of Hamburg. In October 1866, he moved to the Idiot’s Hospital of Langenhagen near Hanover as a junior physician. He relocated to Neimegk in 1868 and then to Rakwitz in 1869. When the Franco-Prussian War began in 1870, he volunteered as a surgeon in the German army in 1871. Discharged a year later, he became a district physician in Wollstein, Prussian Posen (now Wolsztyn, Poland). His family settled there, and his wife gave him a microscope as a birthday gift. Using it, he set up a private laboratory and began his career in microbiology.
Koch started researching microorganisms in a lab connected to his patient examination room. His early work there led to a major contribution: developing techniques for growing bacteria. He also managed to isolate and cultivate selected pathogens.
