Douglas Engelbart

Douglas Carl Engelbart (January 30, 1925 – July 2, 2013) was an American engineer and inventor who pioneered the field of human–computer interaction. He is best known for leading the Augmentation Research Center at SRI International, where his team created the computer mouse, hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to graphical user interfaces, demonstrated at the 1968 'Mother of All Demos.'

Engelbart was born in Portland, Oregon, the middle of three children. After graduating high school in 1942, he served as a radio and radar technician in the Philippines during World War II, where he read Vannevar Bush's article 'As We May Think.' He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Oregon State University in 1948, then worked at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics before marrying Ballard Fish in 1951. He pursued graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, earning an MS in 1953 and a PhD in 1955.
At SRI International from 1957, Engelbart founded the Augmentation Research Center, funded largely by ARPA. His team developed the oN-Line System (NLS), which included the computer mouse, bitmapped screens, word processing, and hypertext. He patented the mouse in 1970, describing it as an 'X-Y position indicator for a display system.' The lab was transferred to Tymshare in the late 1970s, then to McDonnell Douglas in 1984, where Engelbart faced limited interest in his ideas and retired in 1986.
In 1988, Engelbart and his daughter Christina launched the Bootstrap Institute (later the Doug Engelbart Institute) to promote his vision, securing some DARPA funding. He received the 1997 ACM Turing Award and the National Medal of Technology from President Bill Clinton in 2000. He was honored by SRI at the 40th anniversary of the Mother of All Demos in 2008.
