Kyle MacLachlan was born in Yakima, Washington, the eldest of three boys. He graduated from Eisenhower High School and earned a BFA in drama from the University of Washington in 1982. His mother introduced him to stage acting and he performed in plays from age 15. After college, he worked at the Old Lyric Repertory Theatre and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival before making his film debut as Paul Atreides in Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch. The film flopped, but Lynch cast him again in Blue Velvet (1986), which was a critical success. MacLachlan later said Lynch 'plucked me from obscurity.'

MacLachlan's television career includes a recurring role as Trey MacDougal on Sex and the City (2000–2002) and a long run as Orson Hodge on Desperate Housewives (2006–2012). He played The Captain on How I Met Your Mother (2010–2014) and its spinoff How I Met Your Father (2022), and portrayed the Mayor of Portland on Portlandia (2011–2018). He also appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2014–2015) and Fallout (2024–present). His film roles include Lloyd Gallagher in The Hidden (1987), Ray Manzarek in The Doors (1991), Cliff Vandercave in The Flintstones (1994), Zack Carey in Showgirls (1995), and the voice of Riley's father in the Inside Out films (2015, 2024).
