Russell Ira Crowe was born in Strathmore Park, Wellington, New Zealand, on 7 April 1964, to film set caterers Jocelyn Yvonne and John Alexander Crowe. He is Māori and identifies with Ngāti Porou through a maternal great-great-grandmother. At age four, he moved to Australia with his family, settling in Sydney. He began acting in Australia and had his breakthrough role in Romper Stomper (1992), for which he won the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He gained international recognition in the late 1990s for his starring roles in L.A. Confidential (1997) and The Insider (1999), the latter earning his first Academy Award nomination.
