Lore & Background

Bullock was born in Arlington County, Virginia, to Helga Mathilde, an opera singer and voice teacher from Germany, and John Wilson Bullock, an Army employee from Birmingham, Alabama. She lived in Nuremberg, West Germany, and Vienna and Salzburg, Austria for 12 years, growing up speaking German and receiving a Waldorf education in Nuremberg. She studied ballet and vocal arts, sang in the opera's children's choir, and has a scar above her left eye from a childhood fall into a creek. She attended Washington-Lee High School, where she was a cheerleader, and earned a BFA in Drama from East Carolina University in 1987.

After moving to Manhattan, Bullock supported herself as a bartender, cocktail waitress, and coat checker while auditioning. She made her acting debut with a minor role in the thriller Hangmen (1987) and gained early attention for her supporting role in Demolition Man (1993). Her breakthrough came in the action thriller Speed (1994), leading to leading roles in While You Were Sleeping (1995), A Time to Kill (1996), and Hope Floats (1998). She later achieved further success with comedies such as Miss Congeniality (2000), The Proposal (2009), and The Heat (2013), as well as dramas like Crash (2004) and the thriller Bird Box (2018). For her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side (2009), Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and she was nominated for the same award for Gravity (2013).
