Sean Connery was born at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 25 August 1930, of half-Irish and half-Scottish descent. His father was a factory worker and lorry driver; his mother was a cleaning woman. He left school early, working as a milkman, and joined the Royal Navy at age 16, but was discharged at 19 due to a duodenal ulcer. After various jobs—including bodybuilding, modelling, and coffin polishing—he began acting in the early 1950s, appearing in the stage production South Pacific and as an extra in films.

Connery originated the role of James Bond in Dr. No (1962) and continued in the role through six more Eon Productions films, ending with Diamonds Are Forever (1971). He returned for a non-Eon Bond film, Never Say Never Again (1983). Beyond Bond, he worked with directors Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, and John Huston in films such as Marnie (1964), The Hill (1965), The Offence (1973), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), and The Man Who Would Be King (1975).
