Preity Zinta was born into a Hindu Rajput family in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh. Her father, an Indian Army officer, died in a car accident when she was thirteen; her mother was severely injured and bedridden for two years. Zinta studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary boarding school in Shimla, later graduating with an English honours degree and a postgraduate degree in criminal psychology. She began modelling after a chance meeting with a director at a friend's birthday party in 1996, leading to her first television commercial for Perk chocolates.

Zinta made her film debut in Dil Se.. (1998) and Soldier (1998), earning the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
