Gassman was born in Genoa to a German father and an Italian Jewish mother. He moved to Rome as a child and studied at the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts. His stage debut was in Milan in 1942, and he later acted at the Teatro Eliseo. In 1946, he made his film debut in Preludio d'amore, and in 1948 he played in Bitter Rice. He achieved mature successes with Luchino Visconti's company, playing Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and roles in Shakespeare and Alfieri. In 1952, he co-founded the Teatro d'Arte Italiano, producing the first complete version of Hamlet in Italy. His television series Il Mattatore earned him the nickname that accompanied him for life. His comedic breakthrough came in Mario Monicelli's Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958). He later starred in acclaimed films such as The Easy Life, The Great War, I mostri, For Love and Gold, Scent of a Woman, and We All Loved Each Other So Much. He also directed Adelchi and founded a theatre school in Florence. In the 1990s, he appeared on the Italian TV show Tunnel, reciting trivial texts with professional skill. He voiced Mufasa in the Italian dub of The Lion King in 1994.
