Lore & Background

Branson expressed his desire to become an entrepreneur at a young age. His first business venture, at age 16, was a magazine called Student. In 1970, he set up a mail-order record business, and in 1972 he opened a chain of record stores, Virgin Records—later known as Virgin Megastores. His Virgin brand grew rapidly during the 1980s, as he started the Virgin Atlantic airline and expanded the Virgin Records music label. In 1997 he founded the Virgin Rail Group to bid for passenger rail franchises during the privatisation of British Rail. In 2004, he founded the space tourism company Virgin Galactic.

Reader's Guide

Richard Branson's significance lies in his role as a serial entrepreneur who built the Virgin brand across multiple industries, including music, airlines, rail, and space tourism. His ventures often disrupted established markets, such as selling records at lower prices than high-street chains and launching Virgin Atlantic as a competitor to British Airways. Branson was knighted in March 2000 for 'services to entrepreneurship.' His work in retail, music, transport, and his taste for adventure and humanitarian efforts made him a prominent global figure. In 2007, Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. As of June 2023, Forbes estimated his net worth at US$3 billion. His legacy includes the creation of the Virgin brand as a global entity and pioneering private spaceflight through Virgin Galactic.
