Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier (26 August 1743 – 8 May 1794), also known as Antoine Lavoisier after the French Revolution, was a French nobleman and chemist. He is widely recognized for transforming chemistry from a qualitative to a quantitative science, and for his central role in the 18th-century chemical revolution, which had a large influence on both the history of chemistry and the history of biology.

Lavoisier was born to a wealthy noble family in Paris. He studied at the Collège des Quatre-Nations, where his scientific interests were aroused, and later earned a law degree but never practiced. His first chemical publication appeared in 1764, and in 1766 he was awarded a gold medal by the King for an essay on urban street lighting. He worked on a geological survey of Alsace–Lorraine and the first geological map of France.
At age 26, Lavoisier bought a share in the Ferme générale, a tax farming company, which funded his scientific research. In 1771, he married Marie-Anne Paulze, who became his laboratory assistant and a renowned chemist in her own right; she translated English documents, assisted in the laboratory, and hosted scientific gatherings. Lavoisier also helped construct the metric system and wrote the first extensive list of elements, predicting the existence of silicon.
During the French Revolution, Lavoisier was charged with tax fraud and selling adulterated tobacco due to his role in the Ferme générale. He was guillotined on 8 May 1794 despite appeals to spare his life. A year and a half later, he was exonerated by the French government.
