Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet (17 December 1778 – 29 May 1829) was a British chemist and inventor. He invented the Davy lamp and an early form of arc lamp, and is remembered for isolating several elements using electricity, including potassium, sodium, calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, and boron. He also discovered the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine, founded the field of electrochemistry, and discovered clathrate hydrates. Davy served as President of the Royal Society and was a member of several learned societies.

Davy was born in Penzance, Cornwall, on 17 December 1778, the eldest of five children. He attended grammar school in Penzance and later Truro Grammar School. After his father died in 1794, he was apprenticed to a surgeon-apothecary, where he began conducting experiments at home. He learned French from a refugee priest and read Lavoisier's Traité élémentaire de chimie, which influenced his later work. As a young man, he wrote over 160 manuscript poems, though only eight were published, and he also painted landscapes, three of which survive at Penlee House museum.

In 1798, Davy joined the Pneumatic Institution in Bristol, established to investigate the medical powers of gases. There he experimented with nitrous oxide, which made him laugh, and he nicknamed it 'laughing gas,' writing about its potential as an anaesthetic for surgery. He also formed a long romantic friendship with Anna Beddoes, with whom he exchanged poems. His early experiments on heat and light were published in West-Country Contributions, and he began using voltaic batteries in his work.

Davy later became a professor at the Royal Institution, where he delivered the 1806 Bakerian Lecture 'On Some Chemical Agencies of Electricity,' which Berzelius called 'one of the best memoirs which has ever enriched the theory of chemistry.' He used electricity to isolate potassium and sodium in 1807, and calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, and boron in 1808. He also discovered the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine, and studied the forces involved in these separations, inventing electrochemistry. He was a baronet, President of the Royal Society, and a member of several geological and philosophical societies.
