Avicenna

Preeminent philosopher and physician of the Islamic Golden Age.

Avicenna (c. 980 – 22 June 1037), widely known in the West by his Latinized name, was a leading philosopher and physician of the Muslim world. A key figure of the Islamic Golden Age, he worked at the courts of several Iranian rulers and left a lasting mark on medieval European medicine and Scholastic thought. He is frequently called the father of early modern medicine.

His most celebrated works are *The Book of Healing*, a wide-ranging philosophical and scientific encyclopedia, and *The Canon of Medicine*, a medical encyclopedia that became a standard textbook at many medieval European universities and remained in use until 1650. Beyond philosophy and medicine, his writings cover astronomy, alchemy, geography, geology, psychology, Islamic theology, logic, mathematics, physics, and poetry. His philosophy belongs to the Peripatetic school, rooted in Aristotelianism, and he is regarded as one of its greatest proponents in the Muslim world.

Avicenna wrote most of his philosophical and scientific works in Arabic, but also produced key works in Persian; his poetry appears in both languages. Of the 450 works he is believed to have written, about 240 survive, including 150 on philosophy and 40 on medicine. He is noted for his distinctive methodology, blending empirical observation, philosophical reasoning, and logical analysis—especially in his medical writings, such as *The Canon of Medicine*.

The name "Avicenna" is a Latinized form of the Arabic patronym *ibn Sīnā*, meaning he descends from a line of men back to a man named Sina; he was the great-great-grandson of that Sina. His full formal Arabic name is Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥusayn bin ʿAbdallāh bin al-Ḥasan bin ʿAlī bin Sīnā al-Balkhī al-Bukhārī.

Avicenna produced his extensive body of work during the Islamic Golden Age, a period when translations of Byzantine, Greco-Roman, Persian, and Indian texts were intensively studied. Greco-Roman works (Middle Platonic, Neoplatonic, and Aristotelian) translated by the Kindi school were commented on, revised, and expanded by Islamic scholars, who also built on Persian and Indian advances in mathematics, astronomy, algebra, trigonometry, and medicine. The Samanid Empire in eastern Persia, Greater Khorasan, and Central Asia, along with the Buyid dynasty in western Persia and Iraq, fostered a thriving scholarly culture. Under the Samanids, Bukhara rivaled Baghdad as the cultural capital of the Muslim world, and Avicenna had access to the great libraries of Balkh, Khwarazm, Gorgan, Rey, Isfahan, and Hamadan.

Various texts, such as the 'Ahd with Bahmanyar, show that Avicenna debated philosophical points with the greatest scholars of his time. Nizami Aruzi recorded that before leaving Khwarazm, Avicenna met al-Biruni (a scientist and astronomer), Abu Nasr Mansur (a mathematician), Abu Sahl 'Isa ibn Yahya al-Masihi (a philosopher), and ibn al-Khammar (a physician). The study of the Quran and Hadith also flourished, and Islamic philosophy, fiqh (jurisprudence), and kalam (speculative theology) were further developed by Avicenna and his contemporaries.

Avicenna was born in the village of Afshana in Transoxiana to a Persian family. The village was near the Samanid capital of Bukhara, his mother’s hometown. His father, Abd Allah, was from Balkh in Bactria and served as a Samanid official, governing a village of the royal estate of Harmaytan near Bukhara during the reign of Nuh II. Avicenna had a younger brother. A few years later, the family settled in Bukhara, a center of learning that attracted many scholars, where Avicenna was educated, initially under his father’s guidance.

Although his father and brother converted to Isma'ilism, Avicenna did not follow that faith; he was a Hanafi Sunni, the same school as the Samanids. Recognizing his brilliance early on, his parents hired tutors in Arabic and Islamic knowledge to steer him toward intellectual pursuits. He first studied the Quran and literature, memorizing the entire Quran by age 10. His father then sent him to an Indian greengrocer to learn arithmetic, and later to the Hanafi jurist Ismail al-Zahid for fiqh. Sometime afterward, his father invited the physician and philosopher al-Natili to their home to tutor Avicenna. Together they studied Porphyry’s *Isagoge* and possibly Aristotle’s *Categories*. After reading Ptolemy’s *Almagest* and Euclid’s *Elements*, al-Natili told Avicenna to continue independently. By age 18, he was well-versed in Greek sciences. Though his autobiography mentions only al-Natili as his teacher, he likely had others, including the physicians Qumri and Abu Sahl 'Isa ibn Yahya al-Masihi.

At 17, Avicenna became a physician to Nuh II. By at least age 21, his father died, and he received an administrative post, possibly succeeding his father as governor of Harmaytan. He later moved to Gurganj, the capital of Khwarazm, citing "necessity" as his reason.
