Sandra Bullock

Sandra Annette Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in Arlington County, Virginia. She is an American actress and film producer. In 2010 and 2014, she was the highest-paid actress in the world. Her career includes both comedies and dramas. She has won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Critics' Choice Movie Awards. In 2010, *Time* magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people.

Bullock first appeared on screen with a small role in the 1987 thriller *Hangmen*. She gained early notice for her supporting part in the 1993 action film *Demolition Man*. Her big break came in 1994 with the action thriller *Speed*. This led to leading roles in the romantic comedy *While You Were Sleeping* (1995) and the dramas *A Time to Kill* (1996) and *Hope Floats* (1998). In later decades, she found success with comedies like *Miss Congeniality* (2000), *Two Weeks Notice* (2002), *The Proposal* (2009), *The Heat* (2013), *Ocean's 8* (2018), and *The Lost City* (2022). She also starred in the dramas *Crash* (2004) and *The Unforgivable* (2021), and the thrillers *Premonition* (2007) and *Bird Box* (2018). For playing Leigh Anne Tuohy in the biographical drama *The Blind Side* (2009), she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She received another nomination for the same award for her role as a stranded astronaut in the science fiction thriller *Gravity* (2013), her highest-grossing live-action film.

Beyond acting, Bullock founded the production company Fortis Films. She produced several films she starred in, including *Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous* (2005) and *All About Steve* (2009). She also served as an executive producer on the ABC sitcom *George Lopez* (2002–2007), where she made many guest appearances. The media has called her "America's sweetheart," and *People* magazine named her the Most Beautiful Woman in 2015.

Bullock's mother, Helga Mathilde Meyer (1942–2000), was a German opera singer and voice teacher. Her father, John Wilson Bullock (1925–2018), was an Army employee and part-time voice coach from Birmingham, Alabama. He was stationed in Nuremberg, where he met her mother; they married in Germany. Her maternal grandfather was a German rocket scientist from Nuremberg. The family later returned to Arlington, where her father worked for the Army Materiel Command and then as a Pentagon contractor. Bullock has a younger sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, who was president of Fortis Films.

For twelve years, Bullock lived in Nuremberg, West Germany, and in Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, and grew up speaking German. She attended a Waldorf school in Nuremberg. As a child, while her mother toured Europe with operas, Bullock often stayed with her aunt Christl and cousin Susanne (who later married politician Peter Ramsauer). She studied ballet and vocal arts and took small parts in her mother's opera productions. In Nuremberg, she sang in the opera's children's choir. A childhood fall into a creek left a scar above her left eye. Though she keeps her American citizenship, she applied for German citizenship in 2009.

Bullock attended Washington-Lee High School, where she was a cheerleader and performed in school plays. After graduating in 1982, she studied at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, earning a BFA in Drama in 1987. There, she performed in theater productions like *Peter Pan* and *Three Sisters*. She then moved to Manhattan, New York, working as a bartender, cocktail waitress, and coat checker while auditioning.

In New York, Bullock took acting classes with Sanford Meisner. She appeared in student films and landed a role in the Off-Broadway play *No Time Flat*. Director Alan J. Levi was impressed and cast her in the TV film *Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman* (1989). This led to small roles in independent films and the lead in the short-lived NBC TV version of *Working Girl* (1990). She then appeared in *Love Potion No. 9* (1992), *The Thing Called Love* (1993), and *Fire on the Amazon* (1993), before her supporting role in *Demolition Man* (1993).

In 1994, she played Annie Porter, a passenger who ends up driving a bus rigged by a terrorist, in the blockbuster *Speed* alongside Keanu Reeves. She had to read for the part to ensure chemistry with Reeves, and they did "all these really physical scenes together, rolling around on the floor and stuff." The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $350 million worldwide, and established Bullock as a Hollywood star. She won Best Actress at the 21st Saturn Awards and Best Female Performance and Most Desirable Female at the 1995 MTV Movie Awards.

Bullock then headlined the romantic comedy *While You Were Sleeping* (1995) as a lonely Chicago Transit Authority token collector who saves a man's life. Critics praised the film, noting it was "assembled with such skill—and with such a charming performance from Sandra Bullock—that it gives formula a good name." She earned her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. She also starred in the thriller *The Net* (1995).
