Richard Buckminster Fuller Jr. (July 12, 1895 – July 1, 1983) was an American architect, systems theorist, writer, designer, inventor, philosopher, and futurist. He styled his name as R. Buckminster Fuller in his writings, publishing more than 30 books and coining or popularizing such terms as 'Spaceship Earth', 'Dymaxion', 'ephemeralization', 'synergetics', and 'tensegrity'. He is best known for popularizing the geodesic dome, and carbon molecules known as fullerenes were later named by scientists for their structural and mathematical resemblance to geodesic spheres.

Fuller was born on July 12, 1895, in Milton, Massachusetts, the son of a prosperous leather and tea merchant. He was a grand-nephew of Margaret Fuller, an American journalist and women's rights advocate. He attended Milton Academy and Harvard University, but was expelled twice—first for spending all his money partying with a vaudeville troupe, and then for 'irresponsibility and lack of interest.' He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I as a shipboard radio operator and commander of the crash rescue boat USS Inca.

In 1927, after losing his job and facing financial struggles, Fuller contemplated suicide by drowning in Lake Michigan. He reported a profound experience in which a voice told him he belonged to the Universe and should apply himself to converting his experiences to the highest advantage of others. This led him to embark on an experiment to find what a single individual could contribute to changing the world. He later taught at Black Mountain College, where he began reinventing the geodesic dome, which became his most famous invention.
