Douglas Richard Hofstadter (born 15 February 1945) is an American cognitive and computer scientist whose research spans the sense of self, consciousness, analogy-making, strange loops, ambigrams, artificial intelligence, and discovery in mathematics and physics. He is best known for his 1979 book Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, which won the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction and a National Book Award for Science.

Hofstadter was born in New York City to future Nobel Prize-winning physicist Robert Hofstadter and Nancy Givan Hofstadter. He grew up on the campus of Stanford University and attended the International School of Geneva in 1958–59. He graduated with distinction in mathematics from Stanford University in 1965, but dropped out of graduate school in mathematics after feeling unable to keep up. He received his PhD in physics from the University of Oregon in 1975, calling the experience 'traumatic'. His graduate studies led to his discovery of the fractal known as Hofstadter's butterfly.

Hofstadter was appointed to Indiana University's computer science department faculty in 1977, launching his research program in computer modeling of mental processes. He moved to the University of Michigan in 1984 as a professor of psychology and Walgreen Chair for the Study of Human Understanding. In 1988, he returned to Indiana University as College of Arts and Sciences Professor in cognitive science and computer science, where he directs the Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition and the Fluid Analogies Research Group.

His 2007 book I Am a Strange Loop won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Science and Technology. Hofstadter coined the term 'ambigram' in 1983–1984. His 2025 book Ambigrammia Between Creation and Discovery presents hundreds of his hand-crafted ambigrams. He has translated poetry and novels, including a verse translation of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin.
