Madhuri Dixit was born on 15 May 1967 into a Marathi Chitpavan Brahmin family in Bombay to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit. She kindled an interest in dance at age three and trained in Kathak for eight years, becoming a professionally trained Kathak dancer. She received a scholarship as a Kathak dancer at age nine. She was educated at Divine Child High School in Andheri and studied microbiology at Sathaye college in Vile Parle before discontinuing to pursue a full-time film career.

Dixit made her acting debut in 1984 with the drama Abodh. After several commercially failed films, she rose to prominence with the action drama Tezaab (1988). She established herself with starring roles in top-grossing romantic dramas Dil (1990), Beta (1992), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!
