Pierce Brosnan was born on 16 May 1953 in Drogheda, County Louth, the only child of May Smith and Thomas Brosnan. His father abandoned the family when Brosnan was an infant, and his mother moved to London to work as a nurse when he was four. He was largely brought up by his maternal grandparents, then an aunt and uncle, and later a boarding house. He left Ireland at age 11 to reunite with his mother in Scotland, where his stepfather took him to see his first James Bond film, Goldfinger. After leaving school at 16, he trained in commercial illustration at Saint Martin's School of Art before training for three years as an actor at the Drama Centre London.

Brosnan rose to popularity in the television series Remington Steele (1982–1987). After its conclusion, he appeared in films including The Fourth Protocol (1987), The Lawnmower Man (1992), and Mrs. Doubtfire (1993).
