He struggled academically due to dyslexia and worked various odd jobs before settling in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s to pursue music. After a difficult start, he began acting and co-wrote the 1992 film One False Move, leading to his breakthrough with Sling Blade in 1996.

Thornton has appeared in numerous films including Tombstone (1993), Armageddon (1998), Monster's Ball (2001), and Bad Santa (2003).
