Clint Eastwood was born on May 31, 1930, at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco. He is of English, Irish, Scottish, and Dutch ancestry and is descended from Mayflower passenger William Bradford. Eastwood attended Piedmont Middle School, where he was held back due to poor academic performance, and later transferred to Oakland Technical High School, graduating on February 2, 1949. He worked odd jobs including lifeguard, paper carrier, and forest firefighter before being drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. While in the Army, he survived a plane crash when the Douglas AD bomber he was a passenger on ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean near Point Reyes; he and the pilot swam 2 miles to safety.

Eastwood's acting career began after he was spotted at Fort Ord and introduced to Universal-International. He signed his first contract in April 1954 at $100 per week. After minor roles in films such as Revenge of the Creature (1955) and Tarantula, he was cast in 1958 as Rowdy Yates in the CBS western series Rawhide, which became his breakthrough. The Rawhide years (1959–65) were grueling, often filming six days a week for 12 hours a day. Eastwood later achieved international fame in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy and as Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry films. Since 1967, his company Malpaso Productions has produced all but four of his American films.
