Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Kate Paltrow was born on September 27, 1972, in Los Angeles. Her mother, Blythe Danner, is an actress, and her father, Bruce Paltrow, was a film producer and director. She rose to fame as a lead actress in mid-budget and period pieces during the 1990s and early 2000s, later moving into major blockbuster franchises. She has won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Primetime Emmy.

Paltrow first drew attention in films like *Seven* (1995), *Emma* (1996), *Sliding Doors* (1998), and *A Perfect Murder* (1998). Her performance as Viola de Lesseps in the historical romance *Shakespeare in Love* (1998) won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. She followed this with roles in *The Talented Mr. Ripley* (1999), *The Royal Tenenbaums* (2001), and *Shallow Hal* (2001). In 2003, she made her West End debut in David Auburn’s play *Proof*, earning a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress, and she later reprised the role in the 2005 film adaptation.

After becoming a parent in 2004, Paltrow scaled back her acting, appearing only occasionally in films such as *Two Lovers* (2008), *Country Strong* (2010), and *Contagion* (2011). She founded and runs the lifestyle company Goop, which has faced criticism for promoting pseudoscience. She has also written several cookbooks. She earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for narrating *Brown Bear and Friends* (2009). In 2020, she hosted the Netflix documentary series *The Goop Lab*.

Paltrow grew up in Santa Monica, California, attending Crossroads School before moving to the Spence School in Manhattan. At Crossroads, she became friends with Maya Rudolph. She studied art history at the University of California, Santa Barbara, but dropped out to pursue acting. At age 15, she spent a year as an exchange student in Talavera de la Reina, Spain, where she learned Spanish; she is also conversant in French. Her father was Jewish, and her mother is Christian; she was raised celebrating both holidays. Her paternal great-great-grandfather was a rabbi in Nowogród, Poland, and her family includes director and screenwriter brother Jake, actress cousin Hillary Danner, and second cousin former U.S. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. Her godfather is Steven Spielberg.

Paltrow’s first acting role was in the TV film *High* (1989), directed by her father. She made her professional stage debut in 1990 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Her film debut came in the musical romance *Shout* (1991), and her godfather cast her as young Wendy Darling in *Hook* (1991). She appeared in the TV movies *Cruel Doubt* (1992) and *Deadly Relations* (1993). Her first major feature role was in the noir drama *Flesh and Bone* (1993). In 1995, she starred in *Seven* as the wife of a detective, earning a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in *Moonlight and Valentino* and *Jefferson in Paris*. In 1996, she played the title role in the period film *Emma*, based on Jane Austen’s novel.
