Javier Bardem was born on 1 March 1969 in Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands, Spain, to actress Pilar Bardem and José Carlos Encinas Doussinague. His parents separated shortly after his birth, and his mother raised him and his elder siblings, Carlos and Mónica, alone. He comes from a long line of filmmakers and actors on his mother's side, including grandparents Rafael Bardem and Matilde Muñoz Sampedro, and uncle Juan Antonio Bardem. Bardem was brought up in the Roman Catholic faith by his grandmother. As a child, he spent time at theatres and on film sets, making his first television appearance in 1974 in Fernando Fernán Gómez's series El pícaro. He studied painting for four years at Madrid's Escuela de Artes y oficios but abandoned it as a career, taking acting jobs for money.
