Hauer was born in Breukelen during the German occupation of World War II. His parents, both actors, ran an acting school; he attended a Rudolf Steiner school and left at 15 to join the Dutch merchant navy. After a year at sea, he returned to finish high school, studied at the Academy for Theater and Dance, briefly served as a combat medic in the Royal Netherlands Army, and graduated in 1967. His screen debut came in 1969 as the lead in the Dutch television series Floris, cast by Paul Verhoeven. His role in Turkish Delight (1973) brought wider attention, and he made his English-language debut in The Wilby Conspiracy (1975). Hauer's American breakthrough came with Nighthawks (1981) and Blade Runner (1982), where he delivered the famous 'tears in rain' monologue, parts of which he composed the evening before filming. He later appeared in The Hitcher (1986), Escape from Sobibor (1987, winning a Golden Globe), and Blind Fury (1989). From the 1990s, he moved into low-budget films and supporting roles in major films such as Batman Begins (2005) and Sin City (2005). He also became known for his work in commercials, including humorous Guinness ads. In 2011, he starred in The Heineken Kidnapping, winning the 2012 Rembrandt Award for Best Actor. Hauer supported environmentalist causes and was a member of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society; he founded the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association, an AIDS awareness organization. He was made a knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2013.
