Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 – 15 April 1446) was an Italian architect, designer, goldsmith, and sculptor. He is considered a founding father of Renaissance architecture and is recognized as the first modern engineer, planner, and sole construction supervisor. He is most famous for designing the dome of the Florence Cathedral and for developing the mathematical technique of linear perspective in art, which governed pictorial depictions of space until the late 19th century and influenced the rise of modern science.

Brunelleschi was born in Florence in 1377 to a notary and civil servant. He was given a literary and mathematical education but at age fifteen was apprenticed as a goldsmith and sculptor. In 1398 he became a master and joined the Arte della Seta, the wool merchants' guild. His earliest surviving sculptures are small silver figures made for Pistoia Cathedral around 1399–1400. In 1401 he competed for the commission of bronze doors for the Florence Baptistery, producing a panel of the Sacrifice of Isaac. The jury could not choose between his work and that of Lorenzo Ghiberti; Brunelleschi refused to collaborate and the project went to Ghiberti. He then abandoned sculpture and devoted himself to architecture and optics.

Around 1402–1404, Brunelleschi visited Rome, almost certainly with Donatello, to study ancient ruins. This visit influenced his building designs, though some historians dispute its timing due to lack of evidence. His first architectural commission was the Ospedale degli Innocenti (Foundling Hospital, 1419–c. 1445), designed as a home for orphans. The loggia façade, with nine semicircular arches on slender columns, became a model for Renaissance buildings. He also worked on the Ridolfi Chapel and Barbadori Chapel, and undertook the Basilica of San Lorenzo (1421–1442), designing the central nave, collateral naves, and the Old Sacristy, which housed the tomb of Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici.
