Benoit B. Mandelbrot (20 November 1924 – 14 October 2010) was a Polish-born French-American mathematician and polymath known for his work on what he called 'the art of roughness' and 'the uncontrolled element in life.' He coined the term 'fractal' and developed fractal geometry, demonstrating that seemingly chaotic natural forms like clouds and shorelines possess a degree of order through self-similarity. Mandelbrot was born into a Lithuanian Jewish family in Warsaw, Poland, in 1924. His father traded clothing; his mother was a dental surgeon. Tutored privately by an uncle who despised rote learning, he spent time playing chess, reading maps, and observing the world. In 1936, at age 11, his family emigrated to France, fleeing economic and political turmoil. During World War II, the family moved to Tulle, France, where a rabbi helped him continue his studies. He later recalled constant fear of denunciation, noting that a close friend was denounced and killed. After the war, he studied at the École Polytechnique under mathematicians Gaston Julia and Paul Lévy, then earned a master's degree in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Paris in 1952.
From 1949 to 1958, Mandelbrot worked at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, with a year at the Institute for Advanced Study sponsored by John von Neumann. In 1958, he joined IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center, where he spent 35 years as an IBM Fellow. Access to IBM's computers allowed him to create and display fractal geometric images, leading to his 1979–1980 discovery of the Mandelbrot set. He also taught at Harvard University, where he studied U.S. commodity markets and cotton futures, and later became Sterling Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Yale University, the oldest professor in Yale's history to receive tenure. His autobiography, 'The Fractalist: Memoir of a Scientific Maverick', was published posthumously in 2012.
