Blaise Pascal (19 June 1623 – 19 August 1662) was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, philosopher, and Catholic writer. A child prodigy educated by his father, he made foundational contributions to projective geometry, probability theory, and the study of fluids, and is credited as one of the first two inventors of the mechanical calculator. His later religious writings, including the Pensées and Lettres provinciales, remain influential in philosophy and theology.

Pascal was born in Clermont-Ferrand, in France's Auvergne region, and lost his mother at age three. His father Étienne, a tax collector and amateur mathematician, moved the family to Paris in 1631 and educated his children himself. By age 12, Pascal had rediscovered Euclid's first thirty-two geometric propositions on his own, and at 16 he wrote a significant treatise on conic sections, known as Pascal's theorem, which impressed but also drew skepticism from René Descartes.
In 1642, to assist his father's tax calculations, Pascal built a mechanical calculator capable of addition and subtraction, called the Pascaline, establishing him as one of the first two inventors of the mechanical calculator. He later corresponded with Pierre de Fermat on gambling problems, laying the groundwork for probability theory. In 1647, he rebutted Aristotle and Descartes on the nature of vacuum, generalizing Torricelli's work on pressure. He also invented modern public transportation with the carrosses à cinq sols shortly before his death.
After a religious experience in 1654, Pascal identified with the Jansenist movement and wrote his most famous works: the Lettres provinciales, defending Jansenists against Jesuits, and the Pensées, which contains Pascal's wager, a probabilistic argument for belief in God. He also wrote on the arithmetical triangle (now Pascal's triangle) and the cycloid. He died in Paris at age 39 after several years of illness.
