Claude Elwood Shannon was an American polymath known as the 'father of information theory' and a foundational figure of the Information Age. Shannon grew up in Gaylord, Michigan, where he built models, a radio-controlled boat, and a barbed-wire telegraph. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1936 with bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics. At MIT, his 1937 master's thesis demonstrated that Boolean algebra could be used to design switching circuits, establishing the theory behind digital computing. He earned a PhD in mathematics from MIT in 1940 with a thesis on genetics that remained unpublished for decades.
During World War II, Shannon contributed to cryptanalysis for U.S. national defense, writing a foundational paper on modern cryptography. His 1948 paper 'A Mathematical Theory of Communication' created the field of information theory, introducing the term 'bit'. He also co-invented pulse-code modulation and the first wearable computer, and invented the signal-flow graph.
Shannon joined the Central Intelligence Agency's Special Cryptologic Advisory Group in 1951 and was a professor at MIT from 1956 to 1978. He co-organized the 1956 Dartmouth workshop, considered the founding event of artificial intelligence, and built Theseus, the first electrical device to learn by trial and error.
