Guglielmo Marconi

Guglielmo Giovanni Maria Marconi, 1st Marquess of Marconi (25 April 1874 – 20 July 1937), was an Italian electrical engineer, inventor, and politician. He is largely credited as the inventor of radio for creating a practical radio wave-based wireless telegraph system, for which he shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Ferdinand Braun.

Marconi was born in Bologna to Giuseppe Marconi, an Italian landowner, and Annie Jameson, granddaughter of the founder of Jameson Irish Whiskey. He did not receive formal schooling but learned chemistry, mathematics, and physics from private tutors, including Vincenzo Rosa, a high school physics teacher. At 18, he attended lectures at the University of Bologna and used its laboratory. In the early 1890s, he began working on wireless telegraphy, building on Heinrich Hertz's experiments with radio waves. In 1894, he built a storm alarm that detected lightning, and in December 1894 demonstrated a radio transmitter and receiver to his mother. In summer 1895, after raising his antenna and grounding his transmitter and receiver, he achieved transmission over hills at about 2 km. Finding little interest in Italy, he traveled to London in 1896 with his mother to seek support.
